Fediverse branding problem:

There's no logo.

Yeah, GS/pA/Mastodon/Pleroma all have their own logos. But I've run into a few situations where I wanted to have a single, remixable glyph for "fediverse" and couldn't really come up with something that would have buy-in from multiple parties.

@ninjawedding if we're talking about OStatus in general, πŸ’© would be appropriate

@er1n I guess that's part of the problem; it's not even really just OStatus anymore (insofar as it ever was -- depending on who you ask, "fediverse" contains all federated/decentralized messaging protocols)
@grime_witch I like it too, but it's very Mastodon and Postgres kinda has a lock on the elephant anyway
@ninjawedding I think it's more of a placeholder, still need to figure out something proper

@ninjawedding there's plenty of well-known generic microblogging iconography out there

the real challenge in my mind is the retarded tribalism people have about the implementation they use to access the #federation sunshinegardens.org/media/Abu9 sunshinegardens.org/media/VyP7

@ninjawedding it's hard. The fediverse itself is rather anti-branding.
@xj9 @lain I'm usually down with that, but sometimes a single icon can be pretty handy for e.g. client icons, "about me" pages, etc.

The @ is pretty good; unfortunately, it still means "email" to many people. maybe one approach is to work towards effectively overloading that

@ninjawedding
I always thought of a few fun ideas from:
β€”a bucky ball
β€”expandable sphere
β€”tesseract/4D
but yea, i wonder about the fediverse icon (similar to a metaverse one).

@ninjawedding as far as I know, there is no logo for email. We don't need branding, the fediverse will naturally end up with a way to "promote" itself.

@Naouak well, here's my concrete use case::

My "fediverse logo" thing is an outgrowth of a music tool I've been working on for a while (in-development screenshot below, not finished UI, etc etc). It attempts to identify links to audio from statuses (currently pulls from hashtags and groups using the Mastodon v1 and GS StatusNet APIs). I would like it to have an icon.

So far, I think this software is general enough that the idea could be extended to many different implementations of communication software, but I really don't know how to distill that idea into an icon.

@Naouak it's quite possible that this problem is not really a problem (combine music notes and "@" and that's probably a gateway to a few solutions), but nothing really immediate came to mind and I thought it was an interesting puzzle.
